Hypernetworks: capturing the multilayers of cooperative and competitive interactions in soccer
Hypernetwork theory brings together the micro–meso–macro levels of analysis of interaction-based complex systems (Johnson, 2013; Boccaletti et al., 2014). This study considers team synergies (Araújo and Davids, 2016), where teams and athletes are co-evolving subsystems that self-organize into new structures and behaviors. The emergent couplings of players’ movements have been studied, considering mostly the distance between a player and the immediate opponent (e.g., Headrick et al., 2012), and other interpersonal distance measures (Passos et al., 2011; Fonseca et al., 2013). Such emergent interpersonal behavior of soccer teams can be captured by multilevel hypernetworks approach that considers and represents simultaneously the minimal structure unit of a match (called simplex). More stable structures are called backcloth. The backcloth structure that represents soccer matches is not limited to the binary relations (2-ary) studied successfully by social networks analysis (SNA) but can consider also n-ary relations with n > 2. These simplices most of the times composed of players from both teams (e.g., 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 1, 1 vs. 2, 2 vs. 2) and the goals. In a higher level of representation, it is also possible to represent the events associated, like the interactions between players and sets of players that could cause changes in the backcloth structure (aggregations and disaggregation of simplices). The main goal of this study was to capture the dynamics of the interactions between team players at different scales of analysis (micro—meso—macro), either from the same team (cooperative) or from opponent team players (competitive).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
TOFtracker: combination of time-of-flight and high-accuracy bidimensional tracking in a single gaseous detector
A 5-gap timing RPC equipped with patterned electrodes coupled to both charge-sensitive and
timing circuits yields a time accuracy of 77 ps along with a position accuracy of 38 μm. These
results were obtained by calculating the straight-line fit residuals to the positions provided by a
3-layer telescope made out of identical detectors, detecting almost perpendicular cosmic-ray
muons. The device may be useful for particle identification by time-of-flight, where
simultaneous measurements of trajectory and time are necessary
Early release from prison in time of COVID-19: Determinants of unfavourable decisions towards Black prisoners
On the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the overcrowding in prisons led to efforts to decarcerate in order to prevent and control outbreaks in prisons. This study analyses how public support for such exceptional measures are determined by cognitive and ideological factors known to create and maintain racial biases in the criminal system. Participants were asked to express their level of agreement with the early-release of hypothetical prisoners. Results showed participants to be less favourable to the early-release of Black compared to White prisoners, when they had committed a stereotypically Black crime. As expected, the congruency between the crime stereotypicality and the colour of the prisoner's skin did not emerge for White prisoners. Moreover, the difference between the agreement with the release of the Black vs. the White prisoner when both committed a stereotypically Black crime was higher as the level of endorsement of Meritocracy increased. Contrastingly, Anti-egalitarianism only predicted an overall disagreement with prisoners' early-release. This paper highlights the cumulative explanation by different levels of analysis of this current problem and implications for the development of the public opinion on penal subjects.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Antioxidant potential and relation with chemical composition of wild edible mushrooms cap and stipe
A comparative study of the organic acids and phenolics composition and of the total alkaloids
content of entire wild edible mushrooms (Russula cyanoxantha, Amanita rubescens, Suillus granulatus and
[Boletus edulis) and correspondent cap and stipe was performed. All species presented oxalic, citric, malic and
fumaric acids. Phenolic compounds were present in all of the analyzed species, beingp-hydroxybenzoic acid
identified in A. rubescens and S. granulatus species. It seems that this compound may have a propensity to
accumulate in the cap of A. rubescens. B. edulis was the species that presented the highest total alkaloids
amounts. All species revealed DPPH radical scavenging activity, being B. edulis the most effective one
Policy-based network management in an integrated mobile network
Through the seamless integration of different kinds of technologies, services and terminals, and with the expected offered bandwidth, the next generation networks will put a new set of challenges related to operation and management. In this paper we present a Policy-based Network Management System that is being developed inside the Daidalos IST project
Comparative study of phytochemicals and antioxidant potential of wild edible mushroom caps and stipes
A comparative study of the organic acids and phenolics composition and of the total alkaloids content of entire wild edible mushrooms
(Russula cyanoxantha, Amanita rubescens, Suillus granulatus and Boletus edulis) and correspondent caps and stipes was performed.
All species presented oxalic, citric, malic and fumaric acids, with A. rubescens exhibiting the highest total organic acids content. Organic
acids were preferably fixed in the cap. Among phenolics, only p-hydroxybenzoic acid was found in A. rubescens and S. granulatus, in very
low amounts. B. edulis was the species that presented the highest total alkaloid amounts. Except for this species, alkaloids mainly accumulated
in the cap. All of the species exhibited a concentration-dependent scavenging ability against DPPH . B. edulis revealed the highest
antioxidant capacity. The cap seemed to be the part with highest antioxidant potential. Some relationships between chemical
composition and antioxidant capacity were consideredFundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia for a grant (SFRH/BD/22108/2005
Siblings’ influence on the motor competence of preschoolers
The number of single-child families has been rising steadily in recent years, resulting in a
childhood absent of sibling relationships. Being an only child has been shown to have a negative
impact on physical fitness, somatic fitness, and motor development. In this study, we aimed to
understand how living with and without siblings can impact the motor competence of children. One
hundred and sixty-one children (87 boys, 74 girls) from 3.0 to 6.0 years of age (34 only children,
125 siblings) and with no known motor or cognitive disability were assessed using the Motor
Competence Assessment (MCA). Their standardized results on the three MCA subscales (stability,
locomotor, and manipulative) and total MCA were used to group them into high, average, and
low motor competence groups. Motor competence percentile distribution of the sibling and only
child group condition was compared using chi-square tests. Results showed a significative and
positive association between the sibling condition and the distribution between the three MC groups
(chi-square = 6.29; p = 0.043), showing that children in a household with siblings, independent of
their age and sex, show a clear tendency for developing better motor competence.L.P.R. and V.P.L. were partly supported by the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT), under Grant UID04045/2020.
